White Contours of Flowers & Leaves Forming Cell by Cell

White contours define the forms in this painting, drawing on natural shapes reminiscent of flowers and leaves. The composition follows a structure I return to frequently: ornamental patterns arranged symmetrically along a vertical axis. Many forms from earlier layers have become barely visible beneath the surface. I repeatedly painted over parts of the composition, gradually developing and refining the layers until I was satisfied with the final result.

To be honest: I do not always plan every motif from the beginning – there´s a lot of improvisation and eradication of mistakes and bad decisions. In this case, I repeatedly added a lot of new forms and layers, as you can see in the pictures below. Similar to natural processes, where complex structures can emerge through chance and simple underlying principles, the painting gradually developed from a relatively simple visual language into a more complex and harmonious whole.
